   Summer is almost here Jackets! We are finishing our last 10 weeks of school and now is the perfect time to start looking for a summer job. Lifeguarding is a great summer job, and talking from experience, is so fun!

   Being certified as a lifeguard entitles you to saving the lives of others. The lifeguard certification involves being certified for Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED. The prerequisites include:

  • being a minimum age of 16,
  • swim 300 yards continuously (not timed),
  • tread water for 2 minutes using just the legs, and
  • complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exiting the water without using steps or a ladder.

Successfully completing the prerequisites and lifeguard course will result in the required certifications above, and is valid for 2 years. Check out the Red Cross for more information.

   Being a lifeguard, you tend to get really close with your coworkers. Working alongside them in the sun brought me new memories and friendships that I will never forget.

   Working in the hot summer Texas heat has one benefit: TAN, GLOWING SKIN!!!! If you love baking outside in the sun, lifeguarding is the perfect job for you. Rotations on stand can vary, but usually average between 20-30 minutes. Being outside in the sun all day can result in sunburn and heat exhaustion. Some necessary precautions to take while lifeguarding is wearing sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and drinking lots of water.

   If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard this summer, Rockwall Parks & Rec. is now hiring at Harry Myers Pool. They are in need of swim instructors and lifeguards and pay $8.50/hr. For more information or to apply, visit playrockwall.com or call (972) 722-6470. An upcoming lifeguarding certification is being held at the Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center, March 29-March 30, 2019. The days are:

  • Friday, March 29th 5pm-9pm
  • Saturday, March 30th 8am-5pm
  • Sunday, March 31st 8am-4pm
