On October 22nd, 2018, Austin City Officials released a notice stating that Austin residents should boil tap water, after major flooding in the city caused mud & debris to contaminate the city’s water supply in the lakes. They also announced it would take about a week for the water to be properly treated for use in household and drinking. Austin’s stores immediately sold out and ran out of bottled water for residents to use, leaving residents to boil their tap water and students not to use water fountains or sinks at school.

Only on October 28th, was the notice lifted. Not completely, however, as water conservation efforts and certain water restrictions are still in effect. Fortunately seven sites are still open for those who cannot boil their own water or purchase bottled water.

Although the ban has been lifted, Austin officials are still worried over the long-term effects of this flooding.

Bob Daemmrich for the Texas Tribune.

The notice affected nearly a million people in the central Texas town, and has broken a few records for flooding in Texas, but has not reached the levels of crisis such as Hurricane Harvey or Flint, Michigan. Citizens have worked together to help those who struggle to have access to usable water and cut their own consumption down by around 20%. Their recovery is looking good, but they do have a long road ahead of them, especially after dealing with the effects of their summer disaster from Harvey.

Austin’s water supply is predicted to return to normal by the end of the year, if not earlier, but officials are seeking out help from surrounding towns & neighborhoods. To learn more about volunteering and donations, visit ADRNTX to see how you can put yourself forward for this Texas town.
