You may have heard people around the halls of Rockwall talking about the “CCA” or “The Academy” and wondered what in the world they’re talking about.

The Dr. Gene Burton College and Career Academy (CCA) will open this fall. Over 50 courses will be taught at the new 15,000 square-foot building. The CCA will become a place that will allow students from both RHS and Heath to explore career paths that they had not considered before and offer professional certifications to students, which can help secure future jobs and impress colleges.

Allison Belliveau will be the principle of the CCA. She has 17 years of public education experience. Belliveau has taught in two other school districts: Temple ISD and Killeen ISD. She has coordinated CTE (career and technology)  for Temple ISD and taught business in Killeen ISD.

“This is not the first time that I’m opening up a career center like this, so I’m very excited to bring my knowledge and help the students here in Rockwall,” Belliveau told the Rockwall Herald Banner.

A large variety of electives will be held at the CCA next year. The basic pathways moving to the CCA include:

  • Agriculture/Food/Natural Resources
  • Architecture/Construction
  • Arts/Audio/Video Technology/Communications
  • Business Management and Administration
  • Finance
  • Hospitality/Tourism
  • Marketing
  • Health Services
  • Law/Public Safety/Corrections and Security
  • Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics (STEM)
  • Technology Applications
  • Dual-Credit with Collin College

However, core classes will still be taken at each individual high school, along with many classes that have competitive teams attached (such as sports, band, and things of that nature).

As the number of the incoming freshmen class increases each year, the need for more space to hold all these students is currently solved by the building of the CCA.
