The Rockwall Yellowjackets volleyball team represented the Jacket Nation well this season, garnering a 13-1 district record on their way to closing out the regular season with a victory over crosstown rival Heath and securing the District 11-6A championship title.

The season ended earlier than we’d hoped with a playoff loss to College Park, but one of the high points of the year came when head coach, Damon Wilson, reached the impressive milestone of 500 career wins.

The Stinger staff sat down with Coach Wilson, who is in his 12th year with the Jackets, to ask him about his career so far.

Stinger: How long have you been coaching and where did you get your start?

I have been coaching officially since 1992.  I started coaching at my alma mater, Howard Payne University

Stinger: What made you decide to start coaching volleyball?

I fell in love with the game of volleyball in college.  We had a very good men’s team and I was serving as a playing coach on that team.  I was offered the job to coach the women’s team upon graduating and I knew then what a great opportunity I had.

Stinger: What is your philosophy and approach to coaching?

I love the game. I love competing and being a part of a team.  I try to identify the things that make playing on a competitive team great and then I try to bring those things to the volleyball players at Rockwall High School.

Stinger: What has been the most difficult part of coaching?

Without a doubt it is making decisions on who will be a part of teams and who will not.

Stinger: What are some of the lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

I have learned the value of a humble attitude.  I’ve learned the value of putting others above yourself.  I’ve learned that coaching, doing things the right way, treating people the right way, and achieving great things is equal parts challenging and rewarding.

Stinger: Now that you’ve surpassed 500 wins, what would you say are some of the most memorable moments in your coaching career so far?

Some of my favorite memories are with our  men’s volleyball team at Howard Payne playing midnight matches as a part of the HPU recruiting weekend.  They were standing-room-only and ended around 1:30 am.  When I won my third conference championship, a group of people picked me up and carried me out of the gym, which is a fun memory.

I would honestly say the Heath match finishing out this year was an all-time great memory, as well as the 500 celebration.  The presentation video was very cool and I’m very grateful for that gift from players and parents for putting all of that together.
