This conspiracy theory states that the RMS Titanic, famous for hitting an iceberg and sinking in 1912, was switched with its sister ship, the Olympic, and intentionally sunk for insurance money.

The Olympic, which had been launched a year earlier than the Titanic, experienced a major collision with the HMS Hawke in 1911 and almost capsized due to the holes ripped into its hull. The necessary repairs were very expensive and would cause financial disaster for the White Star Line. In order to benefit from their investment in the Olympic line, the company allegedly devised a plan to sink the already damaged Olympic and keep the brand new Titanic in its place.

Though it may seem far-fetched, the boats were docked side by side in the port, so it would have been easy for one to switch the ships’ identification numbers and nameplates.

Here is a look at the evidence to support the conspiracy theory:

The number of portholes on the Titanic originally numbered 14 and the Olympic had 16. However, at the time that it sank, the Titanic had 16 ports.

The Titanic also had trouble finding enough crew and passengers to fill the ship. There was a nationwide coal strike at the time of the launch, putting thousands of people out of work. Despite this, the Titanic struggled to find workers.

Additionally, it was only half full of passengers at the time of its launch. Several high profile passengers, including the head of the company, cancelled their reservations. This could have been because rumors were going around that the White Star Line was planning on sinking the ship.

Additionally, when the Titanic was sinking, another ship called the SS Californian was close by. The Californian was owned by JP Morgan, the head of the White Star Line. The Californian was carrying cargo and no passengers when it received the distress signal from the Titanic. Due to serious navigational errors, it stopped and waited 12 miles away from the sinking Titanic.

Lastly, the propeller on the Titanic is labelled as model number 401. However, it is said that the Titanic’s propeller was used to repair the Olympic when its propeller failed after its collision with the HMS Hawke. If this is true, then it provides strong evidence that the Titanic is really the Olympic.

On the other hand, there are aesthetic differences between the two ships, such as different deck structure and suites. Also, the reputation of the White Star Line would have been ruined despite the insurance money. This theory provides an interesting side to a well-known tragedy.
