Partner Theatre is an elective offered here at RHS where special education and general education students alike can experience a Theatre 1 class. The class itself takes place in sixth period and has a total of twenty-two students. According to Mrs. Shelton, who teaches the class, the preferred name of the class is the “Prop Lords.” This nickname helps the participants to get excited about the class.

In a typical class period, students will begin and end with a music and dance party to get everyone relaxed and ready to have fun. In between, there is usually a guided warmup and an activity. Activities include playing games, working on acting skills such as memorization and facial expressions, and doing short plays and scenes. When asked why he liked the class, senior Obi Nwagwu stated he enjoys it “because I like playing games and interacting with everyone.”

Members develop relationships with each other throughout the course.

This class makes it possible for all students to get experience in acting and valuable social skills, and in cases like Kayla Brondax, to gain experience that will help her pursue a career that allows her to work with those with special needs. Participating in the Prop Lords is also a good opportunity for everyone to learn self-confidence and self-expression, develop new relationships with their peers, and have a good foundation in theatre.

Hopefully, the hard work that every one of the Prop Lords is doing now will result in a full scale performance in the spring semester. With all of the fun activities, learning experiences, and memorable moments that the members are participating in, it’s no wonder that the class has high aspirations for the future. Being a Prop Lord gives every student a chance to learn beneficial life skills as well as basics of theatre while making new friends.
