You see them at every game, but you put little thought into the person who is behind the suit. Sophomore Drake Fuller is the student behind Jasper Jacket.

For decades, Fuller has loved mascots and all of the tricks they do. This is what inspired him to try out for the position. With a mascot like the Auburn Tiger to look up to, Fuller was very passionate about becoming The Jacket.

“I’m gonna be the human inside that suit,” Fuller said.

Whether you’re on the field or on the sidelines, music is usually a strong factor in trying to get pumped for the game. When asked what music he listens to before he puts on the suit, Fuller said he often listens to Katy Perry, Disney music, or Broadway hits. This puts him in the zone to do his favorite move, The Stinger Shake, in which he shakes the stinger for the audience and then “hits people with it”. He says that this makes the audience more enthusiastic and ready to cheer for the team.

“Truthfully, mascot is my life.” said Fuller when asked what he does outside of this hobby.

Being a mascot is a lot of work, especially when there are a lot of events in one week. Fuller said that this past weekend, after arriving home from the game at the Cotton Bowl, all he did was prepare for the upcoming pep-rally. He was very excited, but also a tad anxious, to showcase the skits and dances that they have been working on.

In situations like this, it’s very easy to get stage-fright and feel nervous, but for Fuller, this is not the case. Some may feel uncomfortable and they may not receive great satisfaction from performing in front of a crowd. Fuller, on the other hand, loves doing it because it makes him feel great.

“I don’t have to hold back because people aren’t seeing me, they’re seeing this humungous insect.”
